Welcome to another edition of Oppo-pinion time! Today’s question is as follows: What video game is the most rage-inducing break the screen with the controllerly difficult (or break the monitor with the keyboard if it’s a PC game)game you have ever played? My personal vote goes for the NES title Friday the 13th. If you have never played it or forget what it’s about here is a summary. You are 6 camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake. You run around the randomly zombie infested camp trails trying to desperately find a weapon to throw that is not the rocks you start with. You will hear a random alarm telling you that Jason is slaughtering children in one of the cabins. You check the map and switch to the nearest counselor and go into the cabin to die your inevitable death. On the off chance you manage to fend off Jason in the Mike Tyson’s punch out-esque combat battle he will not really die, he just runs away to finish you off later. Next you will probably try to find some items in one of the two forests on the map. Did I tell you that the forests have no clues to differenciate sections. Good luck getting out! After your counselor dies in the forest at the hands of zombies and forest exclusive foxes, you will switch to another counselor to turn around and kill them very shortly after. I think that to actually kill Jason you need to successfully find the cabins in the woods to get a key to open a cabin in the even more confusing cave area where you fight a very hard boss to finally get the one weapon in the game that actually kills Jason. It’s almost impossible to do that though. The worst part is that the 6 counselors are not even equal. Two of them are fast and jump high, two are average and two are slow and horrible at jumping. So it’s like Hell in a cartridge. Enough of my rambling, let’s hear your oppinion.

Midnight Club 2 and 3 on the PS2 were so damn difficult for the 7 and ten year old me back then.

I never actually played those as a kid, I was always more of a need for speed guy (until EA ruined them like they do with everything).

Tom Clancy’s EndWar comes to mind. I just could never get the hang of it.

Ugh. Fucking Battletoads on the NES. Started out as a fun, co-op Double-Dragon style game - fun for 2-3 levels, and then your idiot toad got on a deathtrap hoverbike for a level of avoiding obstacles that required perfect, split-second timing that the younger me just did not have.

I could never beat that game, but always liked the idea of the secret cabins in the woods and cave. A ridiculous amount of time spent trying to find those things.

This could just be a list of NES games, but I’ll suggest the gold standard.

5:15 if the link doesn’t work properly.

Duh, the Turbo Tunnel.

Battletoads was such an awesome game, but I (and many many others) could never get past this part. Truly infuriating.

Never actually played Battletoads but it seems pretty rough. On the subject of Friday the 13th game I actually played it last night. The best play through I got was finding one of the cabins in the woods but not having a key. It is impossible.

Oh man Need for Speed games were such a blast. I still have fond memories of my very first NFS game, Hot Pursuit III.

This. Battletoads was so much fun, up to when it became impossible.

It is for sure. I used to know where they were. My brothers and I figured it out solely by accident. I think you had to get some kind of torch from one of them and use that to kill a floaty Medusa head which gave you an axe or something.

CLINGER

FUCKING

WINGER.

In my opinion, Battletoads is #1.

I beat it.

There are only two counselors you want to use, and you need to get the torch ASAP. Then it’s not as bad.

Since Battletoads was mentioned I had a hard time with Mega Man 1 on the NES and Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts on the SNES.

I never got past the jet bike level in Battletoads. Tried for years.

I *did* sort of beat Friday the 13th, though. Here was my method:

First, defeat Jason once. If you luck out, you might even pull it off without losing any counselors. Second, defeat him a second time. Much harder...pretty much guaranteed to lose your two slowbies and maybe even one of your useful counselors. Third, give the controller to your best friend, who actually owns the cartridge and spent the better part of two years learning Jason’s attack patterns.

Fourth, watch (read) the end of the game, be completely unsatisfied, and drop in River City Ransom.

Oh man, I completely forgot about Mega Man 1! The only NES Mega Man I couldn't beat.

I didn't really play NFS III Hot pursuit very much but I played the crap out of hot pursuit 2 and played Porsche unleashed a good amount too.

I need to find Porsche Unleashed. Hopefully I didn’t give it away or lost it.

It's one of those games where the whole time you are like I hate this game I hate this game I hate this game but you die and keep playing anyway. Also, Jason is so evil. I was playing yesterday and I had one of the fast guys who had a Machete. I go to fight Jason with him and the first thing that happens is when I get to the cabin, he spawns right in front of me and kills me right away. I didn't even get a hit on him. It was awful.
